What is Doggie Daycare?

Welcome to the newest service available for your canine family member in Pittsburgh’s downtown area. Doggie daycare is a fun alternative to leaving your dog at home alone during the day. At our facility, we offer a supervised social environment for healthy and friendly dogs to interact and exercise with one another. Dog daycare is the newest service for dogs, opening in many major cities across the United States. This new service is a result of the increase in number of dogs owned in the United States, combined with the busy lifestyle of most Americans. As of 2005, it is estimated that there are more than 1,000 dog daycare facilities in the US. This is an increase of 50% from 2001. Today, dog owners consider their dogs to be more a part of the family than just a pet. They want the best for their furry family member. They want their dog to be socialized and friendly with other dogs and people.

Why Doggie Daycare?

There are many reasons for enrolling your dog at our facility. Doggie Daycare not only benefits your dog, it benefits you as well. Here are just a few reasons why you should enroll your dog at Bow-Wow Doggie Daycare:

Who Can Join the Fun?

Due to the interactive layout of the daycare and our high safety standards, we only accept appropriate daycare dogs. Factors such as age, breed, history, personality & playstyle, help us to determine whether a dog is an appropriate dog for our indoor facility. Unfortunately, the environment at Bow-Wow is not suitable for every dog. Some dogs may not be able to handle the highly stimulated environment or may not enjoy the company of an active group of dogs.

Vaccination Requirements:
  • DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
  • Bordatella (Canine cough) - Recommended given every 6 months
  • Rabies

Other Requirements:

  • Must be friendly towards other dogs & people
  • Must be able to get along with a group of dogs and enjoy this type of environment
  • Dogs older than 6 months must have some experience playing with a group of dogs off leash (i.e. gone to a dog park or attended a dog daycare facility)
  • For the safety of our groups, dogs must attend daycare on a regular and consistent basis (i.e. the same day(s) every week with exceptions for vacations, sickness, emergencies, etc.)
  • Must be in general good health
  • We highly suggest that all dogs are on a flea control program
  • Dogs older than 8 months must be spayed or neutered
Note:  Due to the excitement level in the play groups, our high safety standards, and liability issues, certain breeds of dogs may not be appropriate candidates for our indoor daycare facility.

Breeds not accepted at Bow-Wow include: Akitas, Bull Terriers, Mastiffs (including Cane Corsos, Presa Canarios, & Dogue de Bordeaux), Staffordshire Terriers, Chow-Chows, and possible mixes of any of these breeds. This list is not all inclusive.

We also reserve the right to deny service to any dog that we believe to be unsuitable for our indoor daycare facility. (Safety of our playgroups is our absolute top priority!)

To be accepted into Bow-Wow Doggie Daycare, all dogs must go through an interviewing process. It is important that the dogs at our facility interact positively with one another. All dogs must be non-aggressive and able to get along with a group of dogs. During the interview, the dog’s history will be reviewed. The true test is an actual day at daycare. It is ultimately up to the existing play groups at Bow-Wow to accept a new client into the play group. Due to the large demand for daycare at our facility, some days may not be available to new clients. For safety and enjoyment reasons, we only allow a certain number of dogs in our play groups each day.

Interviews for new clients are given on Saturday by appointment only. For availability information or to setup an interview appointment, please call us at 412-566-1083. If possible, print & fill out the application below and bring it with you to your interview. Vaccination records should also be brought to the interview.

A Typical day at Bow-Wow Doggie Daycare

Our facility is committed to caring for your dog when you are unable to do so. Throughout the day, your dog will play and socialize with a group of other friendly dogs. Dogs are naturally social animals. Most dogs enjoy the company of other dogs. Our facility is set up for the dogs to interact and play with each other. There are two special rooms for different types of dogs; i.e. small and large. There is always a trained dog handler in each room to monitor & control the group. The safety of our dog clients is our top priority. We know our dogs - their personalities and the way they play and interact with others. Don't let your dog be just a number.

Dogs can be dropped off anytime between 6:30am and 10am. Dogs can be picked up anytime between 4:00pm and 6:45pm. Between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm, all dogs are kenneled. During this time, the dogs are individually walked and get a break from the playgroup. During the walks, we use basic commands with the dogs. If you would like your dog to be fed during the day to be consistent with his/her regular schedule, we would be happy to do that as well. You will need to bring in his/her own food. The dogs have access to fresh water all day long.

During your dog’s stay at our facility, he/she may even learn some basic commands, if he/she does not already know them. Our dog handlers use basic commands with all the dogs throughout the day. (Commands such as stay, sit, off, etc.) In addition to the use of basic commands, our dog handlers use positive reinforcement techniques to keep the dogs safe throughout the day.

After a full day of play at our facility, you will pick up an entertained and well exercised dog ready for a relaxing evening at home.
